Following up on International Society of Appraisers’ “Sound Advice: Music and Celebrity Appraisals” webinar, and given my love for musical instruments, I was fortunate to spend this afternoon with George Gruhn of GRUHN GUITARS, INC in Nashville. George is the preeminent expert on guitars and guitar values.
He characterized guitar buyers as follows:
- Utilitarians: Generally instrument players who are most concerned with sound, longevity and consistent use of the instrument
- Collectors: Individuals who are most predominantly interested in design, construction, quality and to an extent. playability; and
- Speculators: Those who purchase a guitar with the expectation of an increased trajectory of value and hope to resell it at that expected return within 1 to 2 years.
